Pusa Jwala
Pusa Jwala is an Indian chilli cultivar released by IARI, New Delhi. Breeding sources describe it as a derivative of NP 46A × Puri Red. It became a widely recognised and popular pod type in India, and government horticulture sources specifically note that it is suited for use as a green chilli.
Plants are usually described as dwarf to dwarf-spreading, bushy, and light green in appearance. Pods are long and thin, commonly around 9 to 10 cm in length, and are often slightly curved toward the tip.
Pungency reporting does not line up perfectly across sources. Government and extension material describe it from medium pungent to highly pungent, while an HPLC-based source gives a measured value of 41,682.95 SHU. Using a single-number database entry, 42,000 SHU is a reasonable rounded value that reflects the strongest numeric evidence and supports treating Pusa Jwala as a genuinely hot cultivar rather than a mild one.
Fruit colour descriptions are mostly consistent in official and extension sources, showing a light green immature stage and a red mature stage. Some retail listings insert an orange stage, but that is not as consistently supported. Culturally, the strongest consistent thread is that Pusa Jwala is used as a green chilli in Indian cooking rather than being framed only as a dried chilli type.
