Scotch Bonnet Yellow
Scotch Bonnet Yellow is a Jamaican Capsicum chinense heirloom that is closely tied to the pepper tradition of Jamaica and the wider Caribbean. It is one of the best known Caribbean hot peppers in export trade, and Caribbean production references note that yellow Scotch Bonnet became an important export crop from the Caribbean, especially Jamaica, in the early 1980s. Scientific and horticultural references also show Yellow Scotch Bonnet already in circulation by 1995.
The plant is bushy and productive, with Jamaican production data describing plants about 69 cm tall, while seed listings commonly describe a compact to medium plant. The fruit are the defining feature: bonnet-shaped to squash-shaped, round and wrinkled, usually about 5.0 cm long and about 2.5 to 4.0 cm wide, with a glossy or shiny surface. They begin green and ripen to a rich yellow or golden yellow. White flowers are also consistently reported in seed listings.
Its flavour is repeatedly described as fruity, sweet, citrusy, and smoky, with the heat sitting in the extra-hot range rather than the modern superhot class. Current sources consistently place it in the same general heat bracket as habanero, and it is especially valued because it combines strong aroma with serious pungency rather than delivering heat alone.
Culturally, Scotch Bonnet Yellow is one of the peppers most closely associated with Jamaican food. Live sources repeatedly identify it as a key ingredient in Jamaican jerk and other Caribbean dishes, and Jamaican agricultural material treats Scotch Bonnet as one of the country's important pepper crops. In kitchen use, the yellow form is repeatedly associated with jerk sauces, hot sauces, pepper sauces, pickling, drying, and seasoning blends where its aroma remains important.
Major factual conflict: some modern sources use Scotch Bonnet as a broad umbrella for several Jamaican peppers of different colours and shapes, while others use it more narrowly for the classic yellow bonnet-shaped chinense form. For Scotch Bonnet Yellow specifically, the core identity remains stable as a yellow, bonnet-shaped Jamaican Capsicum chinense.
