About this pepper

Serrano is a traditional Capsicum annuum pepper originating from the mountainous regions of Puebla and Hidalgo in Mexico. Its name comes from the Spanish word “sierra”, meaning mountain, reflecting its highland origins.

Plants produce small to medium-sized pods, typically 5 to 10 centimetres long, with smooth, thin skin and thick, crisp flesh. Fruits usually mature from green to red, though orange and yellow forms also exist.

Heat levels are moderate to high, averaging around 25,000 Scoville Heat Units, hotter than jalapeños but milder than habaneros. Serrano peppers have been cultivated by indigenous communities for centuries and remain a core ingredient in Mexican cuisine, valued for their clean heat, firmness, and adaptability.
