About this pepper

Skunk Chocolate is a modern Italian superhot hybrid created by Rocco Maltesi from MA Wartryx x 7 Pot CARDI. It was already being referred to as established by 2015, and later seed listings describe it as one of the better-known dark superhot collector varieties. The name is tied to its strong aroma and ripe chocolate-brown colour.

The pods are described as large for a superhot, heavily wrinkled, deeply bumpy, and often blocky or squat, with some fruit developing a scorpion-like tail. Published pod size is about 4.0 to 6.0 cm, with some growers describing individual pods as golf-ball sized or larger. Fruit begins green and ripens to a deep dark chocolate brown.

Flavour descriptions are fairly consistent across live sources. Skunk Chocolate is described as fruity, smoky, and slightly earthy, with a strong aroma and a thick, meaty wall. It is regularly noted as a good sauce and powder pepper because the smoky flavour and dark colour carry through strongly.

Plant size is described as vigorous and tall, but the published numbers are not fully aligned. Some listings put the plant around 90 to 120 cm tall, while others list it at about 1.5 m. Heat figures also vary in live circulation, with published numbers ranging from about 750,000 SHU up to 1,200,000+ SHU. A separate conflict appears in one seed listing that tags the region as North America, while multiple other sources place the cultivar’s development in Italy under Rocco Maltesi.
