About this pepper

Skunk Red is a modern Italian Capsicum chinense hybrid developed by Rocco Maltesi from MA Wartryx x 7 Pot CARDI. In current seed trade it is consistently presented as a superhot red line with strong fruity flavour and immediate, aggressive heat, and it was already in documented circulation by 2016.

The plant is described as vigorous, bushy, upright, and highly productive, reaching up to about 150.0 cm tall. Its pods are usually about 4.0 to 6.0 cm long, heavily wrinkled, rough, and bumpy, with an irregular superhot shape that can develop a scorpion-like tail. They begin green and ripen red, with thin walls and a dense oily-looking surface typical of modern gnarly superhot chinense lines.

Skunk Red is repeatedly described as having a fruity, aromatic flavour before the heat takes over, and it is treated in live seller descriptions as a flavourful superhot rather than a novelty-only pepper. Its name is also tied in current trade to the way the burn lingers, with one source explicitly comparing the cling of the heat to a skunk’s lingering smell. In the hobby pepper scene it is mainly grown for fresh superhot use, powders, sauces, and collector appeal, with its combination of high productivity, large gnarly red pods, and brutal heat keeping it in steady circulation.
