Current exact-name listings describe it as a yellow-ripening pepper with lantern to UFO-shaped pods, a strongly fruity flavour, and medium-hot to fairly hot pungency in the 50,000 to 100,000 SHU range.

Its present identity is built around shape, colour, and flavour more than around extreme heat. The pods are described as lantern or UFO shaped rather than elongated or blocky, and the variety is specifically noted for a rich fruity taste. In current circulation it sits in the aromatic chinense category rather than among sweet peppers, with the yellow mature fruit being one of the clearest visual traits attached to the name.

Sonette is also already being used as breeding material in newer hobby seed work. Pepperseeds.ru lists Freams as a house-made cross between Sonette and Sweet Orange Habanero, describing that cross as high yielding, large fruited, fruity, and around 100,000 SHU. That places Sonette within an active modern breeding context rather than as a one-off retail label.

Major factual conflict: older horticultural literature uses the very similar name Sonnette, and sometimes Sonette in later secondary references, for a 1970s Michigan State tobacco mosaic virus resistant bell pepper bred from Morgold, California Wonder, and Keystone Resistant Giant, adapted to the northern United States and ripening green to red. Current exact-name seed listings, by contrast, use Sonette for a yellow-fruited hot Capsicum chinense line, so the older bell pepper material and the modern hot pepper listing do not match the same core identity.
