About this pepper

Starlight Bowie is an Australian Capsicum annuum hybrid created by Packin Heat in 2024 to honour the breeder’s cat Bowie. The cross is (Calico x Mutant) x Cabe Merah Besar, placing it in the ornamental-edible annuum group rather than among older heirloom or landrace lines.

Its parentage brings together three very different annuum backgrounds. Calico contributes the tricolour ornamental side with variegated foliage and dark ornamental fruit genetics. The Mutant side contributes the unusual Candlelight Mutant type background with mutant foliage architecture, clustered ornamental fruiting, and mild to moderate annuum heat. Cabe Merah Besar contributes the Indonesian large red market-chilli side, known for longer smoother fruit, green foliage, and practical culinary use.

Because the hybrid is still in early generations, segregation is expected across foliage patterning, plant structure, pod colour, pod size, and heat level. That gives Starlight Bowie its main identity at this stage: a breeder-created experimental annuum line where dark ornamental traits, variegation, mutant structure, and larger red-fruited market-chilli traits can all recombine in different ways.
