About this pepper

Thor's Thunderbolt is a modern Australian Capsicum chinense hybrid developed by Rebecca Johnston and Trevor Griffiths in North Queensland. It entered wider chilli-growing circulation by 2020 and is repeatedly presented in seed trade as a visually dramatic line with uncertain parentage, known above all for its lightning-bolt pod shape, dark foliage, and strong ghost-like heat. Its name comes directly from the jagged, zigzag look of the fruit, which is one of the traits most consistently used to identify it.

The plant is usually described as bushy, productive, and medium sized, commonly reaching about 60.0 to 100.0 cm tall, with dark green leaves, purple stems, and foliage that can become markedly darker or more purple-black under stronger light. Pods are typically about 5.0 to 7.0 cm long and 20 mm wide, thin fleshed, wrinkled, bumpy, and irregular, often with a hooked or jagged profile rather than a smooth straight form. The fruit begins green, develops deep purple to almost black tones, then moves through pinkish or marbled stages before finishing in peach to cream shades, often retaining purple highlights or sun-exposed marbling.

Its flavour is regularly described as fruity, floral, and lightly citrusy, with a recognisable chinense character and a heat level commonly compared with Bhut Jolokia. In current circulation it is grown both for use and for appearance, especially for powders, hot sauces, salsas, roasting, pickling, and dried products where its heat and aroma carry through well. The variety has become particularly popular among collectors and hobby growers because the plant stays ornamental through much of the season, with dark foliage and unusually coloured pods making it stand out even before full ripening.

Major factual conflict: one live commercial source lists Thor's Thunderbolt at 900,000 SHU, while the broader body of live sources places it around 300,000 to 500,000 SHU, sometimes extending to 600,000 SHU.
