About this pepper

Tropical Tiger is a modern United States Capsicum baccatum hybrid developed by the breeder known as u/RespectTheTree. It entered public view as a limited pre-release for 2023, but breeder-linked listings state that the line had already been grown through the 2022 and 2023 seasons, placing its creation by 2022 at the latest. In chilli-growing circles it quickly became known as a striped baccatum with a strong visual resemblance to other orange-striped modern peppers, but its own identity centres on its orange fruit with red striping, moderate heat, and a distinctly sweet citrus-tropical flavour profile. It was also promoted alongside the pepperbreeding community, giving it a clear place in the newer hobby-breeding scene rather than in older heirloom or landrace traditions.

The plant is generally described as medium to large, productive, and vigorous, usually growing about 80.0 to 100.0 cm tall. Flowers are described as white with greenish-yellow spotting, and the fruit set is repeatedly noted as abundant. The pods are elongated, pointed, and pendant, typically about 7.5 cm long and 13 mm to 15.0 mm wide. Descriptions consistently emphasise that the fruits are sweet and fruity, with an aroma and flavour reminiscent of citrus and tropical fruit, which is the trait most often singled out by both the breeder and later growers. The pods are also regularly described as versatile in the kitchen, especially for hot sauce, with later F2 descriptions also highlighting roasting, pickling, and drying.

Its ripening pattern is one of the defining features. Unripe pods are green, while ripe pods are orange and commonly marked with red tiger-like striping. Breeder-linked descriptions note that the striped trait was still variable in early release seed, but the overall pod type, sweetness, productivity, and tropical-citrus character were already consistent enough for the line to develop a recognisable identity. Heat descriptions place it in the moderate range rather than as a superhot, with breeder-linked listings estimating about 30000 SHU and grower comments describing it as hotter than a jalapeño but below habanero level, roughly in serrano territory. Some later retailer listings place it lower at 3000 to 15000 SHU, but the overall picture remains that Tropical Tiger is a sweet, striped, moderate-heat baccatum grown as much for flavour and appearance as for pungency.
