Yukari Bakan
Yukari Bakan is a traditional Turkish Capsicum annuum chilli grown in southern and central regions of Turkey. It is treated as a local heirloom-style variety rather than a modern hybrid with a documented breeder record.
Plants produce upright clusters of fruit, commonly reported as 10 to 12 pods per cluster, with high yields in warm climates. Mature pods are slender and slightly curved, typically about 12.0 to 14.0 cm long. Fruit ripen from green to bright red and are often described as growing upright on the plant.
Heat is generally reported between 10000 and 25000 SHU. A working value of 10000 SHU reflects a conservative central estimate within that range. Some listings mention lower figures such as 6000 SHU, indicating variability between seed lines or subjective assessments rather than standardised laboratory testing.
Flavour is described as mildly sweet with earthy and slightly smoky notes. In Turkish cuisine, peppers of this type are commonly sun-dried and crushed into flakes or powder for seasoning meats, soups and vegetable dishes. They are also used fresh and for pickling.
The name has been translated in some commercial listings as “gift of God,” though this interpretation appears in marketing descriptions rather than verified linguistic sources. There is no clearly documented first publication year or formal horticultural registration available in accessible records, and most information comes from seed catalogues and grower accounts.
